UPenn Journal of Business Law: Call for Submissions! (Updated Deadlines)

The University of Pennsylvania Journal of Business Law (JBL) invites submissions for its upcoming Spring 2025 symposium, titled Navigating Contemporary Corporate Law. This year’s symposium, scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2025, will explore key issues in corporate law.

We are currently seeking papers for our panels on the following topics:

  1. Disrupting Delaware?: The Future of Corporate Jurisdictions:
    Exploring Delaware’s dominance in corporate law and the rise of emerging competitor jurisdictions.

  2. Clash of Interests: Institutional Investors, Activists, and Retail Shareholders:
    Examining the tensions between institutional shareholders, activist investors, and retail shareholders in corporate governance and decision-making.

  3. Corporate Political Speech and Spending: The Future of Corporate Democracy:
    Investigating the role of corporate political spending and speech in shaping the political landscape, its impact on profitability, and alignment with democratic values and shareholder interests.

  4. Superstar Shareholders: Exploring the Evolving and Complex Role of Controlling Shareholders:
    This panel will examine the influence of controlling shareholders, particularly founder-CEOs, on corporate governance. It will explore legal scrutiny, dual-class share structures, and the balance between control, innovation, and accountability.


Invitation to Submit:

  •  Please express your interest in contributing by Sunday, December 1st, 2024.

  •  Please submit a brief abstract (up to 300 words) and a current CV.

  •  Submissions may be sent via email to jdparker@penncareylaw.upenn.edu or through Scholastica.


Selected papers will be published in JBL’s Vol. 27 Issue 4, scheduled for release in Spring 2025. Should we accept your submission, your final article must conform to the below requirements.

Final Article Requirements:

  •  Articles should be between 15,000 and 30,000 words, including footnotes, and must conform to Bluebook citation style.

  •  Initial drafts are due by Saturday, February 1st, 2025.

  •  Final drafts are due by SaturdayMarch 1st, 2025.

The symposium will feature four panels and a keynote address, and will be held in person at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School in Philadelphia.
