The Montana Law Review hosts a biennial Browning Symposia. The symposium is named in honor of the late Judge James R. Browning, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Judge Browning, a native Montanan, graduated from The University of Montana School of Law in 1941. He served on Montana Law Review’s first editorial board and ultimately became Editor-in-Chief. Judge Browning served with distinction as Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit from 1976 to 1988. As Chief Judge, Judge Browning was credited with reorganizing and modernizing the administration of the Ninth Circuit. Thanks to his political savvy and remarkable leadership skills, Judge Browning was successful in keeping the Ninth Circuit intact despite persistent efforts to divide the Circuit. In recognition of Judge Browning’s dedication to justice and contribution to law in the American west, we continue to dedicate our symposia in his honor.
Like many places across the globe, communities in Montana are struggling to address the housing needs of their residents. The 2024 Browning Symposium will focus on the housing crisis. We invite scholarship across a diverse array of legal disciplines that address the issue within and beyond Montana’s borders.
Final submissions for the symposium and the Montana Law Review can be either abstracts/proposals or completed papers, and should be double-spaced, in 12-point New Times Roman font, and citations should generally comply with The Bluebook. Abstracts/proposals (300-500 words) and papers should be submitted by May 10, 2024.
The Montana Law Review is one of the most important resources of legal scholarship in the State of Montana, and it chronicles and evaluates developments in Montana law. The Montana Law Review also publishes scholarly articles on timely topics of regional and national import. The purpose of the Montana Law Review is to inform and influence in order to improve the creation, administration, and practice of law in this state, the region, and the nation.
The journal is published by the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana, and welcomes scholarly submissions from faculty, practitioners, and students. Our issues generally include articles and essays written by current practitioners, and comments and notes written by students.
